A twice-told-story

Instructions to be frightened by a ghost at a friend’s house at three in the morning

To be successfully frightened by a ghost at a friend’s house at three in the morning you must follow the very next steps. First of all, go to a friend’s house to work on a research project you have to present the next day. Second, get tired working on this assignment; mainly because of the painful and merciless computer’s screen. Third, pretend you effectively finish the assignment because you are really tired and because it is not actually interesting at all for you. Fourth, go to a tight and tough bedstead at 2:45 in the morning. Fifth, try to sleep because you have to get up early in order to present such assignment. Sixth, let a ghost pull you out by the feet at the very moment you are about to slumber away (at 3:00 in the morning). Seventh, tell your friend you “just felt like falling down the bedstead” in order to calm him down once he wakes up in panic because of your screams and abrupt movements. Finally (and optionally), get more frightened after your friend, badly relived, tells you he sometimes feels a ghost pulls him out by the feet twice or three times per night.

“Sonnet”

I lie on a friend’s tight and tough bedstead

Trying to sleep at three in the morning,

My mind stands at the verge of a thick state;

Eyelids weigh due to an eve learning calling.

Though tiredness easily governs me,

Minutes-hands pass and sound aloud,

Suddenly, a horrifying voltage shakes me;

My feet are abruptly and mightily pulled out.

My head is indeed far away from the header,

And my friend brusquely wakes up in panic

Asking me for accounts of such manner;

I say: “just felt falling down”, awfully aphonic.

Alas! My friend, badly relieved, speaks out:

“O! I usually feel a spirit pulls my feet out”.

  1. this is an interesting piece of work. i really liked both versions. the narrative list of instructions,as well as the sonnet succeded in taking the reader through a secuence of rising events ending in a curious climax. instructions text creates a realistic environment, one can experience that heavy atmosphere espressed in the piece of text.
